Earbuds sit in your ears for hours, so they collect earwax, sweat and dust faster than you would expect. A little cleaning keeps the sound clear, the fit comfortable and the earbuds lasting longer. The key is to be gentle, because the speaker mesh is delicate.
What you will need
- A soft, dry microfiber cloth
- A clean, dry cotton swab
- A soft, dry brush (a clean, unused toothbrush works)
- A small amount of 70% isopropyl alcohol (optional, for stubborn marks)
- Mild soap and water (only for removable silicone ear tips)
Step 1: Switch off and disconnect
Turn the earbuds off, take them out of the case and unplug the case if it is charging. Never clean electronics while they are charging.
Step 2: Remove the ear tips
If your earbuds have removable silicone tips, take them off. Wash them with mild soap and water, rinse, and let them dry completely before putting them back. Never wash the earbuds themselves.
Step 3: Clean the speaker mesh
Use the dry brush or a dry cotton swab to gently lift earwax and dust from the mesh. Brush lightly and do not press hard. Never use pins, needles or toothpicks, because they can push dirt deeper or tear the mesh.
Step 4: Wipe the body
Wipe the outside with a dry microfiber cloth. For sticky marks, lightly dampen the cloth or swab with a little isopropyl alcohol and wipe the body only, keeping it away from openings and the speaker mesh. Do not pour any liquid directly on the earbuds.
Step 5: Clean the charging contacts
The small metal contacts on the earbuds and inside the case can get dirty and cause charging problems. Gently clean them with a dry cotton swab, and let everything dry fully before charging again.
Step 6: Clean the case
Open the case and use the brush or a dry swab to remove lint and dust from the corners. Wipe the outside with the cloth. Keep water away from the charging port.
Step 7: Let everything air dry
Leave the earbuds, tips and case open and dry for a few minutes before putting them back together.
Things to avoid
- Water, soap or sprays on the earbuds or case
- Sharp objects on the mesh
- Hair dryers or direct heat
- Strong chemicals and bleach
How often should you clean them?
A quick wipe after use helps a lot, and a deeper clean every week or two is enough for most people. If you use them for workouts, wipe off sweat each time.
Frequently asked questions
Why do my earbuds sound quieter than before?
Earwax or dust blocking the mesh is a very common reason. A gentle cleaning often fixes it.
Can I wash earbuds under the tap?
No. Only removable silicone tips can be washed, and only with mild soap and water.
Should I share earbuds with someone?
It is better not to. If you do, wipe them first, because earbuds can carry dirt and bacteria between ears.
